13 DAYS: NYUNGWE DESTINATION VISIT

Day 1: Departure from Kigali to Nyamagabe

Depart from Kigali and drive for 3 hours and half to Nyamagabe along the way you will enjoy magnificent view of mountains, enjoy daily activities of Rwandans in their real villages, banana plantations, historical sites like Kamegeri Rock and you may also visit the ethnographic museum at Huye as this city is close to Nyamagabe. On your arrival, you will check in at the Hotel in Nyamagabe town and enjoy your evening at leisure.

Day 2: A visit to Murambi Genocide Memorial Centre

After breakfast in the morning at 7:30, you will drive about 10 minutes from Nyamagabe town to Murambi Centre. The memorial has been developed as a permanent exhibition to the Genocide as an estimated 50,000 Tutsis were Killed in this place and only 20 survived. Its design focuses on developing a memorial from which the school children and local community can benefit.
The visit takes 2 to 3 hours, and after you will go back to the Hotel for lunch. After having your lunch and relaxing, you may go for a city tour which could last 2 hours by visiting local markets, shops, and enjoying the beautiful mountains making the Congo Nile trail taking memorable pictures as well. After, you will come back to the Hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Chimpanzees tracking in Nyungwe Forest

After deciding the activity you can do in the morning after having your breakfast at 6:00 am, you will get your packed lunch, water and other facilities that can make you enjoy your adventure and you drive about 1 hour to Uwinka Visitor Centre where you will be provided with the entrance permit, the guide and the briefing. Then after, you will go for chimps tracking. During the rainy season, chimpanzees are often seen in the vicinity of the colored trails, and chimps tracking can be undertaken on foot from the Uwinka visitor centre.
During the dry season, however, the chimps tend to move to higher elevations, and tracking them entails a drive followed by a hike of up to 4 hours in either directions. After, you will go back to Nyamagabe town or decide to stay in the lodges located in Gisakura near the forest for overnight and dinner as well.

Day 4: Canopy walk

Wake up in the morning and after breakfast drive to Uwinka visitor centre to get your entrance permit and meeting your guide. This walkway is constructed in Igishigishigi Trail and leaves 1km from Uwinka. It leads to 200m trail poised between giant trees, offering a magnificent view of the upper canopy of 80m high and is also a very good bird-watching area. At the exit of this trail you will find a village called Banda, here it is where you may experience different experiences related to the Rwandan culture like traditional dance and wedding, local food preparation, traditional housing and dressing, local beer brewery etc. You can choose any activity to do before going back to the Hotel for putting your feet up and break.

Day 5,: Congo Nile divide trail

You will wake up early in the morning, check out at the hotel, and drive 3 hours from Gisakura to Musarara where you will start this 3 days walk. This is the only multi days trail in Nyungwe National Park. The trail ends to the main road Rusizi-Huye, 7 km in the West of the Uwinka Visitor Centre. The tents and other facilities are required to make the adventure more enjoyable. After this, you will go to the Hotel for refreshments and relaxation.

Day 8: Source of the Nile walk

After the breakfast in the morning you will drive 3-4 hours from Uwinka visitor centre to Gisovu tea factory in Karongi. From here you will walk 4 hours walk to reach what has been identified as the true source of the Nile River. After this adventure you will come back using the same way to the Hotel. You may take your lunch at the tea estate.

Day 9: Bird watching in Nyungwe forest

In the morning at 6:00 am after breakfast you will drive to Uwinka visitor centre for payment procedures and meeting the guide as well. You drive to Rangiro, 1.5km in the East of Uwinka. The dirt road to Rangiro is regarded as the best excursion for birdwatchers. In addition to bird watching this road offers some stunning views over mountains, and is a good place to see mangabeys, silver monkeys, and a variety of butterflies. The Gisakura tea estate, Kamiranzovu marshland, Bigugu Mountain, Karamba area, and canopy walkway are also the good bird watching areas. After your adventure you drive back to the hotel for Lunch and relaxation.

Day 10: A visit to Bugarama hot springs

In the morning after Breakfast you will check out and drive to Rusizi town. On your arrival you will check in at hotel near Lake Kivu close to Bukavu city (DRC), relax and have your lunch. In the afternoon you will drive 60 km from Rusizi to Bugarama for a visit to hot springs. They are set among rolling hills and lush vegetation and you will get a massage (optional) as the locals use the springs for its medicinal properties. On your way back you will pass to the border between Rwanda and DRC just to observe the movements of people and goods and continue straight to the Hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 11: Nkombo Island visit

Nkombo Island is the largest Island on Lake Kivu after Idjwi, and is close to Rusizi Town. After taking your breakfast at 7:00 am you will take the boat leading to this Island considered as one of the Rwanda`s treasures. Along the way you will see the water birds and visiting the Island is an opportunity to see the dance troupe perform their unique dance style, catch and eat fresh fish and spend time in the community village. You can also share lunch with the local people (local food taste). After the journey you will take the boat ride around 3:00 pm back to the Hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 12: Shangi first Rwandan German military outpost visit

In the morning after breakfast you will check out from the Hotel and drive heading to Kigali passing through Rusizi-Karongi-Kigali Road. At this way is where you will experience the history of the first German colonial military post founded in 1898 by captain Berthe, a German Army officer. After visiting the place you will continue your journey passing the tea plantation and experience tea production from leave to cup. You will make a stopover at Nyamasheke center for lunch and you resume your journey in the afternoon.
Along the way you may also visit Kirambo market, one of the oldest markets in Rwanda located in 7 km from Nyamasheke District. This will be an opportunity to buy locally produced items at good prices while enjoying the views of Lake Kivu. You will check in a Lodge or Hotel in Karongi and take a dinner there.

Day 13: The way back to Kigali

At this very day, after breakfast you will check out from the Hotel and drive straight to Kigali where the journey started. On your way back you will enjoy the view of beautiful mountains and some historical sites as you make stopovers. This is the end of the tour.
